Mission Innovation
Mission Innovation (Ml) is a global initiative of 22 countries and the European Union aiming to dramatically accelerate global clean energy innovation. Leaders of participating governments launched Ml at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris, France. The purpose is to reinvigorate and accelerate public and private global clean energy innovation that leads to widely affordable clean energy. The current Ml members are Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, South Korea. Saudi Arabia, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and the European Union.
The members of MI have committed to seek to double their governments' clean energy research and development (R&D) investments over five years, reaching a combined USD 30 billion per year in 2021, while encouraging greater levels of private sector investment in transformative clean energy technologies.

Ml works in tandem with the Breakthrough Energy Coalition (SEC), a private-sector initiative launched in parallel with Ml. BEC, which recently announced the investor-led fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), is committed to helping accelerate the cycle of innovation through investment, partnership, and thought leadership.

The membership of the CEM and Ml overlap, yet the two forums are distinct-with complementary missions. While the CEM focuses on deployment of clean energy technologies and solutions that are available today, Ml focuses on scaling R&D for the new technologies of the future.
